Janet Echelman’s re-imagining of the possible should lead all of us to wonder what might be the equivalent of her projects in horn or simply musical terms. The world of the 21st century musician is very different that it was not that long ago, no different than for many other professions. What we need more than anything is vision, a new vision of what’s possible. The best way to acquire that vision is, paradoxically, to look outside the world of horn playing. See what’s out there (like these wondrous airy sculptures) and bring it back to the realm of horn and translate the inspiration (or combine it with other inspirations) into the language of horn.
